Elementary
At RioGAFA, literacy comes alive through rich texts, meaningful discussion, explicit instruction, and authentic reading and writing experiences. Students build strong foundational skills, deepen comprehension, expand vocabulary, and develop critical thinking while connecting literature to visual art, music, theatre, and movement through arts integration. Beginning in 3rd grade, students participate in a novel study each semester, exploring high-quality literature through discussion, writing, and creative projects. These experiences build reading stamina, analytical thinking, and a lifelong love of reading.

Middle School
In middle school, students engage with complex texts, purposeful writing, and meaningful discussion that strengthen their reading, communication, and critical thinking skills. Through a combination of literature, informational texts, and arts-integrated learning experiences, students analyze ideas, evaluate evidence, and make connections across content areas. Students participate in multiple novel studies throughout the year, using discussion, writing, research, and creative expression to deepen comprehension and explore diverse perspectives. These experiences prepare students to think independently, communicate effectively, and become lifelong readers and learners.

Elementary Math
At RioGAFA, students develop a deep understanding of mathematics through problem-solving, reasoning, discussion, and real-world application. Rather than simply memorizing procedures, students learn to explain their thinking, make connections between mathematical concepts, and persevere through challenging tasks. Through collaboration and arts-integrated experiences, students explore mathematics in meaningful ways that build confidence, conceptual understanding, and strong problem-solving skills.

Middle School Math
In middle school mathematics, students engage in rigorous problem-solving, mathematical reasoning, and collaborative discussion that deepen their understanding of concepts and prepare them for higher-level coursework. Students analyze problems, justify their thinking with evidence, and apply mathematics to real-world situations. Through challenging tasks and arts-integrated learning experiences, students build confidence, perseverance, and the ability to think critically while developing strong mathematical skills for future success.

Elementary and Middle School Science

Students engage in hands-on, phenomenon-based science investigations that spark curiosity and encourage exploration of the natural world. Aligned to Next Generation Science Standards, science instruction integrates questioning, inquiry, engineering design, and evidence-based reasoning as students explore real-world phenomena and solve authentic problems. Through observation, experimentation, and collaboration, students develop a deep understanding of scientific concepts and practices. Students also explore health-related topics, building awareness of personal wellness, healthy habits, and the connections between science and everyday life.

Elementary PE
Students participate in physical education experiences that promote fitness, motor skill development, teamwork, sportsmanship, and healthy habits that support lifelong wellness.

Elementary
At RioGAFA, humanities and culture are woven into everything, literacy, science, and math. We celebrate each student's language and heritage, inviting families to share their traditions, stories, and culture with the class and school community. Through the study of history, geography, and diverse cultures, students develop an understanding of the community, New Mexico, the United States, and the world around them.

Middle School
Culture and a celebration of language remain at the heart of learning. Families are welcome to share their stories, arts, crafts, food, and traditions, helping students connect, appreciate, and learn from one another’s unique backgrounds. Students explore New Mexico, United States, and world history and geography, building an understanding of how people, cultures, and events have shaped our communities and world.
